Sr. Azure Systems Engineer - GM Motorsports
Role Details
Job Description
The Role
GM's Motorsports Software team delivers the competitive edge that drives our drivers to the podium across NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, and Formula 1. We are the "pit crew" for the engineering teams, ensuring the innovative cloud-based infrastructure, software development platforms, and data pipelines they rely on are robust, secure, and highly available.
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Azure Systems Engineer to design, implement, and maintain our cloud-based infrastructure. This role will ensure the reliability, security, and optimal performance of our Azure environments, supporting critical business operations.
In this role, you will serve as a force multiplier for our analysts, architects, developers, and data engineers. You will navigate the complex intersection of multi-cloud infrastructure (Azure/AWS), identity management, and developer tooling to eliminate friction and enable high-velocity delivery. You won't just maintain servers; you will engineer the platforms and solve the unique tactical challenges that allow GM to dominate on the track.
What You'll Do
- Administer and troubleshoot the core developer ecosystem, including code repositories, CI/CD pipelines, project management suites, and specialized engineering license servers.
- Manage complex user lifecycles for both internal GM employees and external race team partners, ensuring correct provisioning across directory services, cloud RBAC, and SaaS platforms.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for "stop-ship" blockers—resolving network peering issues, authentication failures, quota limits, and specialized compute connectivity.
- Assist in managing the cloud checkbook; tracking consumption against purchase orders, resolving vendor billing discrepancies, and optimizing resource allocation across Azure and AWS.
- Deploy and maintain cloud resources using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), managing everything from Kubernetes clusters and databases to bespoke VM-based workloads.
- Interface with corporate IT and external software vendors to resolve support tickets and procure necessary software/licenses.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Advanced proficiency with Terraform for managing cloud resources. Experience with modules, state management, and CI/CD integration for infrastructure is essential.
- Deep implementation knowledge of Entra ID (Azure AD), including B2B guest flows, conditional access, App Registrations, and debugging SAML/OIDC claims.
- Expert-level proficiency in PowerShell and *nix shell scripting. You must be comfortable writing robust tools to automate user provisioning, data migration, and API interactions.
- Practical experience designing and securing complex network topologies, including Hub-and-Spoke architectures, routing control, Private Link implementations, and VPN configurations for hybrid connectivity.
- Experience managing organization-level settings in GitHub (Teams, Repos, Actions) or similar DevOps platforms.
- Operational experience with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) beyond simple deployment—managing upgrades, cluster scaling, ingress strategies, and complex networking.
- Ability to troubleshoot OS-level issues (services, firewalls, mounting storage) in both Linux and Windows environments.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Relevant Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Solutions Architect Expert)
- Passion for Motorsports and working in a high-pace environment.
- Proven ability to analyze cloud spend, implement budget controls, and execute cost-saving strategies (Rightsizing, Reservations, Savings Plans).
- Experience hosting and debugging network license servers for specialized engineering applications.
- Practical experience supporting the full ML lifecycle—from configuring GPU compute resources and training environments to deploying inference endpoints and managing model registries.
