Role Details

We are seeking a hands-on Platform Database Engineer to own, optimize, and evolve our software-defined data ecosystem on Google Cloud (GCP). Following the successful completion of our cloud migration, we are now focused on refining our platform for maximum performance, global scale, and developer self-service. You will lead the architectural evolution of our multi-model fleet, leveraging Cloud Spanner for global consistency, AlloyDB for enterprise-grade relational performance, and Bigtable for high-throughput NoSQL workloads. Using Python and Terraform, you will treat infrastructure as software—continuously improving the database lifecycle, optimizing costs, and ensuring the absolute reliability of our mission-critical data layer.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Architectural Evolution: Refine and scale our multi-model GCP strategy; determining the roadmap for Cloud Spanner (global scaling), Bigtable (streaming data/IoT), and AlloyDB (performance-intensive relational).
  • Systemic Optimization: Act as the "SRE for Data," diagnosing complex distributed system bottlenecks and tuning query execution plans to ensure peak performance across our global cloud footprint.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC) & Automation: Drive "Zero-Touch" database operations by developing and maintaining automated provisioning, auto-scaling, and self-healing routines using Terraform and Python.
  • Advanced Data Orchestration: Enhance cloud-native ETL/ELT flows using Python, Dataflow, and Pub/Sub to ensure high-velocity data movement between operational stores and BigQuery.
  • Platform Guardrails: Establish standardized monitoring frameworks via Cloud Monitoring, defining SLOs/SLIs for the database layer and mentoring engineering teams on cloud-native best practices.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • GCP Mastery: Deep, hands-on expertise with the modern Google Cloud data stack:

  • Relational: Expert knowledge of Cloud Spanner (sharded architectures, splits, and global transaction management) and AlloyDB/Cloud SQL.

  • NoSQL: Proven experience tuning Bigtable for high-throughput, low-latency workloads.
  • Cloud-Native Integration: Fluency in BigQuery, Dataflow, and Pub/Sub.
  • Python Proficiency: 6+ years of advanced Python development focused on automation, API integration, and building custom tooling to manage the database fleet at scale.
  • Database Expertise:

  • PostgreSQL Internals: Expert-level knowledge of query planners, indexing strategies, and locking mechanisms in a cloud-managed environment.

  • Distributed Systems: Strong understanding of distributed database architecture, consistency models, and the CAP theorem.
  • DevOps & Automation:

  • Advanced proficiency in Terraform for stateful infrastructure management.

  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI, Jenkins) for automated database deployments and schema migrations.
  • Experience with Cloud Composer (Airflow) for complex data orchestration.
  • Compliance & Governance: Understanding of data privacy, residency, and encryption standards (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR) within a distributed cloud environment.
