About us

Coalition is the world's first Active Insurance provider designed to help prevent digital risk before it strikes. Founded in 2017, Coalition combines comprehensive insurance coverage and innovative cybersecurity tools to help businesses manage and mitigate potential cyberattacks.

Opportunities to make an impact with bold thinking are real—and happening daily at Coalition.

About the role

We are looking for a Staff Site Reliability Engineer to lead AI enablement across our engineering organization. As AI-assisted development reshapes how software gets built, a new platform layer is emerging underneath — one that requires guardrails, quality gates, security standards, and tooling infrastructure to ensure AI-generated output is reliable, secure, and production-worthy. This role owns that layer.

This role blends building and buying — you'll design and develop custom tools and frameworks where the market doesn't meet our needs, while continuously evaluating the evolving landscape to ensure we're leveraging the best solutions available. We aim to be on the cutting edge, not the bleeding edge — investing deliberately in what delivers real value and staying ready to pivot when the market shifts meaningfully.

You will define and drive the strategy for embedding AI-native tools and practices into the software development lifecycle — from AI-assisted code review and developer workflow automation to establishing security standards for emerging frameworks like MCP. You'll own AI tooling standards for the engineering org, evaluate and adopt the best platforms, use data to measure impact and prioritize where to invest next, and partner with teams to automate repetitive workflows using agentic tools. This is a visible, high-influence role — you'll run lunch-and-learns, shape best practices, and be the go-to voice for how we leverage AI to multiply engineering output while keeping the foundations trustworthy.

This role sits within our Platform SRE team, and you'll participate in the team's ad-hoc support rotation, providing infrastructure guidance and troubleshooting for engineering teams. This means you bring deep SRE fundamentals — AWS, Terraform, production operations — alongside your AI enablement focus.

Responsibilities

  • 8–10+ years of experience in SRE, DevOps, Cloud Engineering, Platform Engineering, or Software Development roles
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar
  • Experience building AI/LLM-powered developer tools or integrations
  • Demonstrated ability to drive org-wide tooling adoption, including change management, training, and measuring outcomes
  • Proficiency in prompt engineering techniques
  • Proficiency in Go or Python, with experience building production-grade automation, tooling, or libraries
  • Hands-on experience operating production environments in AWS
  • Strong experience with Terraform
  • Experience with container orchestration platforms like ECS or Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions
  • Solid understanding of observability practices including system metrics, distributed tracing, and SLOs. Datadog is a plus.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal

Skills and Qualifications

  • AI Enablement Strategy: Define and own the standards and best practices for AI-assisted development across the engineering organization, from tool selection to workflow integration.
  • Tooling Development: Evaluate, build, or adopt AI-powered tools that improve code quality, catch vulnerabilities earlier in the development process, and reduce review cycle times — whether that means evolving internal solutions or identifying and integrating third-party platforms.
  • Adoption & Advocacy: Partner with engineering teams to understand what's impacting their AI tool adoption, guide them through improvements, and lead org-wide enablement efforts such as lunch-and-learns, workshops, and documentation.
  • Measuring Impact: Establish metrics and feedback loops to quantify the impact of AI tooling on developer productivity, code quality, and delivery speed.
  • Infrastructure Automation: Contribute to the design and scaling of production environments using AWS and Terraform when on rotation or as needs arise.
  • Mentorship & Standards: Mentor engineers across the team, uphold high infrastructure quality, and actively shape the best practices and standards used by the organization.
  • On-Call: Participate in a low-volume on-call rotation.

Bonus Points

  • Experience troubleshooting complex distributed systems in a high-traffic production environment.
  • Exposure to event streaming systems such as Kafka or Kinesis.
  • Experience building Internal Developer Platforms (IDP) or designing self-service infrastructure workflows.
  • Familiarity with systems security, compliance requirements, or infrastructure hardening.
  • Experience with agentic AI workflows, MCP frameworks, or AI-powered automation beyond code generation.
  • Track record of leading incident response or driving post-incident review processes.

Compensation

As a remote-first organization, our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several Canadian geographic markets.

In Alberta, British Columbia & Ontario the base salary for this position ranges from $180,400/year up to $230,400/year.

Vacancy Status: This posting is for an existing vacancy.

Use of AI: We utilize AI-assisted tools to help us organize and review the high volume of applications we receive. However, our human recruiting team makes all final hiring decisions and interview selections, valuing personal connection over algorithms.

About the role

We are hiring a Staff Data Scientist to define and lead the data science strategy for Coalition’s insurance business. In this role, you will own some of our most important analytical and modeling problems across underwriting, claims, CoalitionRe, and portfolio management helping us to move the organization from ad hoc analyses to reusable, rigorous decision frameworks.

You’ll lead multi-quarter, cross-functional initiatives, design and analyze complex experiments and quasi-experiments, and build data and modeling assets that become the source of truth for leaders. Your work will shape how we measure performance, price and select risk, structure reinsurance, and allocate capital, while mentoring other scientists and analysts to raise the technical bar across the team.

Responsibilities

  • Define and lead the data science strategy for Coalition’s insurance business, driving multi-quarter initiatives across underwriting, claims, CoalitionRe, and portfolio management.
  • Lead cross-functional analytics and data science projects that uncover insights and optimization opportunities across the end-to-end customer and broker journey, from submission through renewal and expansion.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to other data scientists and senior analysts, setting a rigorous technical bar and developing repeatable frameworks (e.g., experimentation, causal analysis, model evaluation) that move the team away from one-off analyses.
  • Design and analyze experiments and quasi-experiments (e.g., guideline changes, pricing strategies, broker programs), establishing best practices for test design, power, guardrails, and interpretation in low-frequency / high-severity insurance settings.
  • Define, document, and maintain core insurance funnel and portfolio metrics (e.g., submission-to-bind, hit rate, loss ratio, frequency/severity, attachment points), and build automated dashboards and reporting used by leadership for decision-making.
  • Develop data models and scalable analytical / ML workflows that improve reliability, repeatability, and time-to-insight for insurance stakeholders and downstream teams.
  • Analyze disparate data sources (policy, exposure, pricing, claims, broker behavior, reinsurance, external data) and synthesize findings into clear, influential narratives with prioritized recommendations.
  • Influence product, insurance, and revenue leadership with data-backed recommendations, shaping roadmaps, investment decisions, and OKR tracking.
  • Mentor and uplevel junior and senior analysts/scientists, contributing to team best practices, code quality, documentation, and review processes; help shape the data science culture and career pathways.
  • Champion innovation in methods and tooling, including causal inference, advanced statistical techniques, and appropriate application of ML/AI to unlock new capabilities and scale impact.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 10+ years in analytics or data science with a consistent track record of measurable product, underwriting, or revenue impact.
  • Deep domain experience (8+ years) in the Insurance industry, ideally P&C or cyber/E&O, working closely with underwriting, claims, actuarial/portfolio, or reinsurance teams.
  • Expert SQL, including complex data modeling, performance optimization, and clear, maintainable documentation.
  • Expert in Python or R for analysis, experimentation, and reproducible workflows (e.g., notebooks, scripts, modular libraries).
  • Strong grasp of statistical methods: hypothesis testing, experiment design, causal thinking (e.g., quasi-experimental designs, difference-in-differences, propensity scores), and robust interpretation under real-world constraints.
  • Experience with BI tools such as Looker or Tableau, and the ability to design reliable, executive-ready dashboards and self-serve measurement layers.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; able to translate complex technical work into clear, actionable language for senior non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives end-to-end: framing ambiguous problems, aligning stakeholders, delivering high-quality work, and landing the change in partner teams.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Exposure and usage of AI-assisted coding IDEs like Cursor or GitHub Copilot to improve development and analysis velocity.
  • Technical rigor to move the team from “one-off” reports to repeatable AI frameworks.
  • Domain experience in fintech or adjacent regulated industries in addition to insurance.
  • Familiarity with broader go-to-market and servicing tools and data, such as Looker, Amplitude, Google Analytics, Marketo, Salesforce, Segment, or Zuora.
  • Experience with analytics and data workflows such as dbt or Airflow, especially for productionizing analytical datasets or model pipelines.

We are hiring an Applied Scientist II to build and improve the machine learning and GenAI models that power our underwriting decisions. You will take ownership of high-impact modeling problems end-to-end. This includes framing and data exploration through model design, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring, directly influencing how we assess and price cyber risk.

You’ll work closely with underwriters, product managers, and engineers to design robust pipelines, experiment with state-of-the-art ML/GenAI techniques, and ship models that meaningfully move business metrics. Your work will turn complex insurance and security signals into reliable decisioning systems, helping Coalition write better business at scale while pushing the frontier of AI in underwriting.

Responsibilities

  • Build and advance our most sensitive and business-critical ML and GenAI models that power underwriting decisions and risk selection.
  • Drive and execute ML projects end-to-end: problem framing, data exploration, feature engineering, model design, prototyping, offline/online evaluation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Design and implement ML pipelines for data preprocessing, feature engineering, model training, hyperparameter tuning, and model evaluation, enabling rapid and reproducible experimentation.
  • Apply state-of-the-art ML and GenAI workflows (e.g., gradient-boosted trees, deep learning, LLMs, prompt engineering, transfer learning) to improve underwriting accuracy, automation, and decision support.
  • Own model quality and robustness by defining success metrics, running ablations and diagnostics, and iterating to outperform prior baselines.
  • Survey and incorporate recent advances in ML/GenAI research into our core underwriting capabilities, balancing scientific rigor with practical constraints.
  • Collaborate closely with underwriters, product, data, and engineering partners to clarify requirements, align on tradeoffs, and ensure models integrate cleanly into production workflows.
  • Communicate methods and results clearly through documentation, presentations, and design reviews; share learnings and patterns that level up the broader team.
  • Contribute to a culture of scientific and data excellence by bringing mature empathy, best practices, and lightweight processes to experimentation, code review, and model governance.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or MS in a quantitative or computational field (e.g., Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Math, Electrical Engineering) or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of full-time experience developing and deploying ML- and data-based solutions in production.
  • Practical, hands-on experience with supervised and unsupervised learning methods, including model selection, regularization, and calibration.
  • Expertise in statistical analysis methods, especially regression analysis, statistical inference, and forecasting / time-series methods.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and core ML libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, XGBoost/LightGBM, PyTorch/TensorFlow) and SQL for working with large, messy datasets.
  • Experience with experiment design and evaluation (e.g., A/B tests, offline metrics vs. online KPIs, guardrails) and with ensuring reproducible results.
  • Comfortable and effective in ambiguous problem spaces; demonstrated ability to own and drive projects with minimal oversight and process.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain complex modeling choices and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Minimum 1+ year of experience in insurance underwriting modeling (pricing, risk scoring, eligibility, or related applications).

Bonus Points

  • Experience with modern GenAI techniques relevant to underwriting (e.g., using LLMs for document understanding, unstructured-to-structured extraction, or underwriter copilot workflows).
  • Familiarity with model governance in regulated environments, including documentation, validation, monitoring, and change management.
  • Experience with ML orchestration and MLOps tools (e.g., Airflow, Prefect, MLflow, SageMaker) for managing training, deployment, and monitoring at scale.
  • Exposure to causal inference or uplift modeling for understanding the impact of underwriting or guideline changes.
  • Experience working with cyber or P&C insurance data (exposures, limits, deductibles, claims, external risk signals).
