AI Technical Business Partner, Director – R&D China

Shanghai Jing'An Office, China Posted today

At AstraZeneca we’re dedicated to being a Great Place to Work. Working here means being entrepreneurial, thinking big and working together to make the impossible a reality. We’re focused on the potential of science to address the
unmet needs of patients around the world. We commit to those areas where we think we can really change the course of medicine and bring new ideas to life.

Summary

We are seeking a senior AI Technical Business Partner to lead the industrialization of AI across our R&D organization. This is not just a prototyping role; it is a scaling role. You will bridge the gap between scientific intent and enterprise-grade software execution. You will define the AI-ready data strategy, partner deeply with our data and AI Infrastructure teams, and ensure that our AI solutions transition from isolated pilots to robust, secure, and scalable corporate assets.

Mission

To operationalize intelligence at scale. You will drive the transition of AI from "experimental notebooks" to "enterprise capabilities," ensuring that our data foundation is AI-ready and our technical architecture is secure, compliant, and integrated with the global ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Discovery & Rapid Prototyping (The "Builder")

  • Build Proof-of-Concepts (PoCs): Don't just write a requirements doc; build the MVP. Use Python, LangChain, or low-code orchestration platforms to spin up functional prototypes (e.g., a RAG-based literature review bot or a molecule property predictor) to validate use cases with scientists immediately.
  • Feasibility Analysis: Evaluate incoming requests not just for business value, but for technical reality. Assess data readiness, API availability, and model suitability (e.g., "Can Llama-3 handle this toxicology reasoning, or do we need a fine-tuned BioMistral model?").
  • Sandbox Management: Manage local AI environments for your therapeutic area, ensuring scientists have secure, compliant access to test new models.

2. Solution Architecture & Agent Orchestration (The "Architect")

  • Design Agentic Workflows: configure the specific "tools" and permission sets for AI agents. Define exactly how an autonomous agent interacts with internal APIs (e.g., querying the ELN, accessing chemical inventory) using standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
  • Data Engineering Liaison: Write complex SQL queries or Python scripts to assess data quality before a project starts. Translate scientific data needs (e.g., unstructured pathology reports) into structured engineering tickets for the core Data Platform team.
  • Integration Strategy: Map the technical integration of AI tools into existing scientific software (e.g., integrating a generative design tool directly into Schrödinger Maestro or Benchling).

3. Governance & Technical Risk (The "Engineer's Conscience")

  • Red Teaming & Evaluation: Personally "red team" internal models to identify hallucination risks in scientific outputs. Set up automated evaluation frameworks (LLM-as-a-Judge) to monitor model drift in clinical workflows.
  • Security Implementation: Enforce technical guardrails to prevent PII/PHI leakage in prompt injection attacks. Ensure all prototypes comply with GxP and 21 CFR Part 11 standards regarding audit trails and reproducibility.

Qualifications

Technical & Strategic Experience:

  • Scaling AI: Proven track record of taking at least 2-3 AI/ML products from concept to enterprise-wide deployment (not just local pilots). Experience with MLOps best practices (MLflow, Kubeflow, model registry).
  • Data Strategy: Deep understanding of data engineering for AI. Experience designing "Feature Stores" or "Knowledge Graphs" that feed AI models. Familiarity with scientific data standards (HL7, FHIR, CDISC) is a strong plus.
  • Regulatory & HGR Knowledge: Experience working with sensitive healthcare data (PII/PHI) and understanding the complexities of Human Genetic Resources (HGR) regulations (e.g., GDPR, China HGRAC, HIPAA) in a global R&D context.

Technical Stack (Hands-on familiarity required):

  • Cloud & Infra: Strong grasp of cloud architectures (AWS/Tencent/Ali) and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes). You don't need to be a DevOps engineer, but you must speak their language.
  • AI Platforms: Experience with enterprise AI platforms (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake) and vector database architectures.
  • Coding: Proficiency in Python for data analysis and prototyping.

Soft Skills:

  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Ability to drive consensus across "triads" of stakeholders: Scientists (Users), Engineers (Builders), and Security/Legal (Guardians).
  • Strategic Communication: Ability to explain to the C-suite why "cleaning data" is a capital investment required for "AI success."

Why Join Us?

  • Architect the Future: You won't just use tools; you will help define the corporate AI infrastructure for the next decade of drug discovery.
  • High-Stakes Data: Work with one of the world's most valuable datasets—proprietary genetic and clinical data—that has the potential to cure diseases.
  • Empowered Role: This role sits at the nexus of decision-making, with the mandate to shape technology, process, and culture simultaneously.

Senior Data Standards Engineer – Evinova

Spain - Barcelona, Spain Posted today

About the role:

Evinova is a health tech company purpose-built to transform how clinical trials are designed, executed, and understood. Our platform powers data analytics and trial oversight across entire sponsor portfolios, at global scale.

We operate at the intersection of life sciences and technology. We move fast, take smart risks, and build things that genuinely matter.

As a Senior Data Standards Engineer at Evinova, you'll architect and operate the automated pipelines that keep our Data Platform current with evolving clinical dictionaries and reference datasets — from CDISC controlled terminology releases to FHIR value sets and ICH M11 updates. Your work will be the backbone of how clinical study protocols (CSPs) are interpreted, designed and monitored across Evinova’s expanding customer portfolio.

This is a senior engineering role with genuine scope: you'll set technical direction, drive automation-first thinking, and mentor a high-calibre team — all in a fast-moving health tech environment where your decisions directly influence how medicines reach patients.

What if every time a clinical data standard was updated, your platform simply knew — and adapted automatically, with no human intervention required? That's the challenge you'll own.

You'll join a high-performing, globally distributed Data Platform team. We work in agile/scrum cycles, deploy on AWS, and hold ourselves to engineering standards that support both regulated (GxP) and innovation-track workstreams.

Accountabilities/Duties:

Automated Standards Ingestion — Zero Human Intervention

Your primary mission is eliminating manual effort from the standards lifecycle. You will:

  • Design and own fully automated ELT/ETL pipelines that detect, ingest, validate, and publish new releases of clinical dictionaries (e.g., MedDRA, WHO Drug, SNOMED CT, CDISC CT, NCI Thesaurus) without human intervention

  • Build event-driven and scheduled pipeline architectures on AWS (Lambda, Step Functions, Glue, S3, EventBridge) that react to upstream standard releases and propagate changes downstream automatically

  • Implement automated versioning and change detection so downstream consumers always know what changed, what's new, and what's been deprecated — and can act on it programmatically

Clinical Standards Architecture

  • Apply deep expertise in USDM, ICH M11, FHIR, and CDISC (SDTM/ADaM/CDASH) to define canonical schemas, mapping strategies, and versioning models for clinical dictionaries and controlled vocabularies

  • Design optimized data stores (relational, columnar, graph as appropriate) for serving clinical reference data at query speed — including schema design, indexing, partitioning, and performance tuning

  • Model how terminology, code lists, and controlled vocabularies relate across standards and internal systems, enabling consistent coding and reporting across all clinical workflows

AI & Machine Learning Integration

  • Implement AI-assisted mapping between dictionaries and source systems — surfacing high-confidence automated mappings and flagging exceptions for review

  • Deploy ML-based anomaly detection to identify inconsistencies, unexpected changes, or quality issues across ingested standards data

  • Explore and productionize LLM-assisted tools for standards interpretation, change summarization, and intelligent workflow automation

Technical Leadership & Stakeholder Influence

  • Set engineering best practices for the data standards domain — pipeline design patterns, testing strategies, infrastructure-as-code, observability, and documentation standards

  • Serve as the technical authority on clinical data standards for the Data Platform team, providing guidance to clinical operations, data management, biostatistics, safety, and regulatory functions

  • Communicate complex standards and data engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences — from engineers to clinical leads to senior leadership

  • Mentor and upskill team members, fostering a culture of automation-first engineering and continuous improvement

Essential Skills & Experience:

Data Engineering & Automation

  • 8+ years in data engineering or software engineering, with a strong track record of delivering production-grade ELT/ETL pipelines for complex, regulated data domains

  • Demonstrated expertise building fully automated, event-driven pipelines that operate without human intervention in steady state

  • Proficiency in Python (primary) and/or Typescript or Java; advanced SQL; infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, AWS CDK, or equivalent)

  • Deep, hands-on AWS experience: S3, Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge, RDS — and the architectural judgment to choose the right service for the job

  • Strong database design skills across relational and columnar stores — schema design, query optimization, partitioning, indexing

Clinical Data Standards

  • Thorough, hands-on knowledge of CDISC (SDTM, ADaM, CDASH)FHIRUSDM, and ICH M11, and how controlled terminologies are implemented in practice across clinical trial workflows

  • Proven fluency in terminology mapping — semantic alignment, code-list mapping, managing evolving and inconsistent terminologies across standards and source systems

  • Practical understanding of how clinical dictionaries (MedDRA, WHO Drug, SNOMED, NCI Thesaurus, CDISC CT) are structured, versioned, and applied across the study lifecycle

AI/ML Application

  • Experience applying AI or ML techniques to data engineering challenges — automated mappings, anomaly detection, intelligent quality checks, or NLP-based standards analysis

  • Ability to evaluate and integrate LLM-based tools into engineering workflows where they add genuine, measurable value

Leadership & Communication

  • Demonstrated ability to set technical direction and mentor engineers in a senior/lead capacity

  • Exceptional communicator — able to influence cross-functional stakeholders and translate between engineering and clinical/regulatory domains

  • Comfort operating in agile/scrum teams; fluent with Jira, Confluence, and related tooling

  • Experience working in or alongside GxP-regulated environments, with understanding of validation, audit trail, and documentation requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Data Engineering, Life Sciences, or related field

  • Direct pharma/biotech, CRO, or clinical technology experience, particularly in data standards or data engineering functions

  • Familiarity with metadata repositories and standards governance processes (e.g., CDISC Library API, NCI EVS)

  • Experience with additional standards: CDASH, SEND, HL7 v2/v3, OMOP CDM

  • Background in platform or product engineering — thinking beyond pipelines to reusable services and APIs that teams consume

Why Evinova?

Evinova sits at a rare intersection: the scientific credibility and scale of AstraZeneca, with the engineering culture and pace of a health tech company. You won't be maintaining legacy systems — you'll be building the infrastructure that defines how clinical data standards are consumed across an entire enterprise, with AI accelerating everything.

  • Real impact: Your pipelines will directly influence how clinical trial data is coded, analyzed, and submitted to regulators globally

  • Engineering-first culture: Automation, clean architecture, and technical craft are valued — not just delivery velocity

  • Global scale, startup pace: Work with a distributed, high-calibre team across multiple continents, with the resources of a top-5 global pharma behind you

  • Growth: Evinova is still building. The decisions you make now will shape the platform for years

When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to inspire life-changing medicines. In-person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge perceptions. That's why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office. Service Operations Director - Evinova

US - Gaithersburg - MD, United States of America Posted 10 days ago

$165656 - $217424

WHY JOIN US?

Evinova is a health-tech business, accelerating the delivery of better health outcomes by propelling the life sciences sector forward in digital health, from the inside. Through our application of science-based expertise, evidence-led rigour, and human insight, our digital solutions are deliberately designed so that everyone can reach better health outcomes together. Evinova is a health-tech business within the AstraZeneca Group.

Digital health, the point at which healthcare, technology, data and analytics converge, is the subject of phenomenal promise, with the World Health Organisation believing it has the potential to improve health for everyone. At AstraZeneca, we’ve been working hard to make this a reality, with the years of experience we have accumulated enabling us to now embed digital health at scale across R&D.

To achieve our goal of improving patient experience and outcomes AstraZeneca has Digital Health as one of the top 4 strategic priorities for the company, details on digital health strategy can be found here. Oncology is the largest therapeutic area within AstraZeneca and second highest cause of death globally, with AstraZeneca’s ambition to eliminate cancer as a cause of death.

Recognizing the importance of individualized flexibility, our ways of working allow employees to balance personal and work commitments while ensuring we continue to create a strong culture of collaboration and teamwork by engaging face-to-face in our offices 3 days a week. Our head office is purposely designed with collaboration in mind, providing space where teams can come together to strategize, brainstorm and connect on key projects.

The Problem You’ll Solve:

Evinova is growing fast. Our platform supports critical work in clinical trials and digital health, our customers span the globe, and the stakes of any disruption are real. As we scale, so does the need for a dedicated, expert-led function that owns how we respond when things go wrong — and how we make sure they go wrong less often.

This role exists to build and lead that function.

The Role:

We’re looking for a Service Operations Director who thrives in complexity, leads with calm authority under pressure, and cares as much about the people affected by an incident as the technical resolution itself. This is a coordination and process leadership role — but is a connection point for engineering, product, and customer experience.

At Evinova, an incident is anything that prevents our engineers from doing their best work or our customers from being served: production outages, deployment failures, pre-production degradation, and internal tooling issues all fall within your remit. You will be the one person who owns the response, every time.

You’ll work closely with our Customer Service team, who manage direct customer relationships during issues and outages. You’ll give them the structure, information, and communications support they need to keep our customers informed and confident — even when things are going wrong.

What You’ll Do:

Own Every Incident, End to End

  • Serve as the single accountable coordinator for all production incidents, leading War Room response sessions and driving resolution.
  • Coordinate and manage all internal incidents — including deployment failures, pre-production performance degradation, staging outages, and any platform-level or P1/P2 severity tooling or environment issue that prevents engineers from doing their work.
  • Apply and refine Evinova’s tiered incident response plan, ensuring the right people are mobilized based on severity and customer impact.
  • Authorize emergency change actions (ECA) during incidents where standard change processes cannot be followed.
  • Chair blameless post-incident reviews, producing clear action items and ensuring follow-through.

Build the Structures That Prevent the Next One

  • Develop and maintain incident response playbooks, runbooks, and escalation paths.
  • Own our on-call processes, on-call tool configuration, on-call schedules, and global handoff protocols.
  • Track and report on incident KPIs — MTTD, MTTR, repeat incidents — and present trends to leadership.
  • Partner with engineering leads to drive continuous improvement in platform reliability and incident preparedness.

Connect Engineering with the Business

  • Own all stakeholder and executive communications during active incidents, providing timely and accurate updates. Coordinate with our customer service teams for all customer-facing communication and interactions.
  • Own customer-facing incident communications — including status page updates, post-incident summaries, and reusable comms templates.
  • Own the process for publishing product documentation, user guides, and release notes — ensuring content reaches the right audiences at the right time, without owning the writing itself.

What You Bring:

Must-Have Experience and Skills

  • 8+ years of experience in incident management, technical program management, or platform/cloud operations in an engineering organization.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams calmly and decisively under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience communicating with senior leadership during live incidents.
  • Familiarity with ITIL or similar incident and change management frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with on-call tooling — PagerDuty, Splunk On-Call, or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience with observability and monitoring platforms — Datadog, Splunk, CloudWatch, Grafana, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and modern SaaS architecture.
  • Experience running post-incident reviews and building a culture of blameless continuous improvement.

Highly Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Background in health tech, regulated software environments, or high-availability platforms.
  • Experience with ITSM platforms — ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with SLO/SLI and error budget frameworks.
  • Experience managing distributed, multi-timezone on-call rotations and global handoff protocols.
  • Experience building or owning documentation publishing workflows across engineering organizations.
  • Experience with software engineering practices to help close down issues preventing our engineers from working.

A Little More About the Role:

If you are a seasoned Service Operations professional, you should already know that given the nature of this role you may not have a 100% standard schedule. Feel free to ask for more specifics about this role’s requirements, we want to ensure our employees are happy.

We serve customers across the globe, from North America and Europe to Asia, and that means our work doesn’t follow a single time zone or a standard 40-hour week. We’re a scale-up, and the pace reflects that. We trust our people to own their schedules, show up for their teams, deliver for our customers, and stay connected across regions when it counts. We do our best to protect your working hours and avoid regular disruptions outside of them, though most roles by their nature require more flexibility in the mornings or evenings depending on location.

If you thrive in an environment where the work is meaningful, the hours are real, and flexibility goes both ways, you’ll fit right in here.

Principal Software Engineering Lead (eCOA) - Evinova

US - Gaithersburg - MD, United States of America Posted 40 days ago

About Our Engineering Organization

Our Product Engineering organization consists of cross-functional squads with the people and skills needed to deliver innovative digital products to patients and healthcare providers in clinical trials worldwide. We ship on quarterly program increments using agile methodology.

We are proud to have one of the strongest software development teams in the health tech space, with deep technical and domain skills. This is a place where you build real things, solve hard problems, and grow alongside engineers who care deeply about their craft and its purpose.

About the Role

This is not a traditional management role. We are looking for a hands-on engineering leader who writes and reviews code, makes architecture decisions in pull requests, and leads by building alongside their team. You will own the technical direction and delivery of our eCOA product area while leading a multi-squad engineering organization.

You will spend a significant portion of your time in the codebase: reviewing pull requests, pairing with engineers on complex problems, evaluating AI-assisted development workflows, and ensuring our architecture scales. The remainder of your time is spent on team development, cross-functional collaboration, and technical strategy.

We expect you to be the strongest technical voice in the room on your product area, someone who can credibly challenge an architectural decision, spot issues in a code review, and prototype solutions to unblock the team.

Key Responsibilities

Hands-On Technical Leadership (50%+ of your time)

  • Regularly review pull requests, provide substantive code-level feedback, and enforce quality standards across squads.
  • Make and own architectural decisions for the eCOA platform, including API design, data models, service boundaries, and infrastructure choices.
  • Write production code, particularly for complex or foundational components where your expertise accelerates the team.
  • Pair with engineers on difficult problems and use these sessions as coaching opportunities.
  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools and workflows, establishing team conventions for AI code generation, prompt engineering, and automated testing.
  • Define and enforce technical standards: testing strategy, CI/CD pipeline health, observability, and deployment practices.

AI-Native Engineering Culture

  • Embed AI tools (coding assistants, agentic workflows, automated code review) into the team’s daily development process as a force multiplier, not an experiment.
  • Evaluate and integrate AI capabilities into the eCOA product itself, including intelligent data capture, adaptive questionnaire logic, and patient experience personalization.
  • Champion a culture where engineers own AI-generated output with the same rigor as hand-written code: thorough review, testing, and accountability.
  • Stay current with rapid advances in AI-assisted development and translate those into practical team-level improvements.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a multi-squad engineering organization. Develop squad leads into strong technical leaders in their own right.
  • Set a high technical bar in hiring: personally conduct technical interviews and assess candidates’ ability to build, not just describe.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, psychological safety, and intellectual honesty about technical debt and tradeoffs.
  • Manage performance with clear, measurable expectations rooted in engineering output and quality, not just process compliance.

Product & Delivery

  • Partner with Product Owners to translate clinical requirements into sound technical plans, ensuring feasibility, scalability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Drive execution against quarterly program increments with predictable, high-quality delivery.
  • Collaborate across the Unified Trial Solution engineering organization to ensure architectural coherence and shared platform leverage.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent demonstrated through professional experience
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong track record of building and shipping production systems.
  • 3+ years leading engineering teams (squads, chapters, or similar) while remaining hands-on with code.
  • Deep proficiency in at least one of our core stacks: React/React Native (frontend), Node.js/Java (backend), AWS cloud services.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound architectural decisions across frontend, backend, and infrastructure.
  • Practical, daily experience using AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, or similar) in your own coding workflow.
  • Strong understanding of agile delivery frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) applied in practice, not just theory.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience building or deploying AI/ML features in production applications, including agentic AI systems or LLM integrations.
  • Experience developing and delivering electronic Clinical Outcome Assessments (eCOA) or patient-facing clinical trial software.
  • Familiarity with GxP, SaMD validation, or regulated software development processes.
  • Experience with remote patient monitoring (RPM) solutions including patient-reported data and clinician-facing visualizations.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or a visible track record of technical thought leadership (blog posts, conference talks, published architectural decisions).
  • Clinical research domain experience.

What This Role Is Not

  • A pure people-management position where you are removed from the codebase. If you haven’t written or reviewed code in the past month, this role is not the right fit.
  • A project management role. We have Product Owners and delivery support for process coordination. You own the technical how, not the project timeline.
  • A checkbox exercise in AI adoption. We need someone who has genuinely transformed their own development workflow with AI tools and can credibly lead others to do the same.

SO, WHAT’S NEXT?
